The Workshop

As teachers we owe it to our students to pass along information that will allow them to unlock their musical potential and to prevent the possibility of future injury.  Designed to introduce and develop the principal sensations and movements of well-coordinated technique at the keyboard, The Physically Perceptive Pianist offers an intensive, two-day workshop where participants will learn:

  • Basic anatomy of the upper body with attention to muscle involvement for specific movements at the keyboard – understanding why a whole-body approach is necessary for pain-free, injury-free and effortless playing
  • Skeletal alignment – an introduction to the Alexander Technique
  • The 4 components of the basic keyboard stroke – laying the foundation for powerful, free movement at the keyboard
  • An overview of movements beyond the basics: note grouping, scales and arpeggios, chords and octaves, rotation
  • The application of movement principles for young students – learn how to utilize these concepts using teaching materials of your choice

The fundamentals of the basic keyboard stroke and the Alexander Technique will be reinforced in small group sessions so participants can both experience the physical sensation and observe the biomechanics. Workshop size is strictly limited due to the distinctive, hands-on approach of all small group sessions!

I just wanted to say thanks again for really changing me into a different piano player and teacher.  My sound, my feel, my attitude is all changed.  I only wish I'd met you sooner!

Beth Martelli, Florida workshop participant

To see Jackie's piano students perform was to see her workshop in action.  What a great demonstration of the topics and ideas she covered at our last meeting.  I saw such flexible arms and hands as they performed.  I truly enjoyed the piano sounds I heard - from the tiny girls on up.

She (Jacqueline Herbein) is an amazing teacher.  I attribute so much of my success to her.  She gave me a passion that I didn't have before.
